Didn't seem like it, at all!

This is basically an independent, American period thriller (set in 1961,)
giallo styled film (the killer goes around in a mask, gloves and a slick raincoat) which
might also be late enough to be considered a proper slasher.
Other than the fact that there are red herrings it plays a
bit like a blend between The Bad Seed (1956) and Don't Look Now (1973).
The story itself is edited in a somewhat confusing manner,
motivations revealed abruptly and are not wholly believable, but the movie gets
props for excessive religious iconography (how the heck did they get permission
to film inside a church?) unusual casting, and not shying away from graphic onscreen
violence (knife and brick attacks.) Lots of careful and neat character (such as stained pants on a fat guy) and background (such as nude posters at the police station) details.
Are the prayers actually in Latin or is it just gibberish?
Difficult to tell with this particular sound transfer.
Probably has a better reputation than it deserves, but still
remains an interesting looking curiosity. High possibility that it might improve
on a second viewing.
Available for free on Amazon Prime.

RodThat scene didn't bother me too much because while the kitten may have been killed in the script, I'm fairly sure it wasn't killed in real life. Just roughed up a bit (hopefully). Similar to when Klaus Kinski in a moment of method acting madness nearly squeezes the life out of the monkey during his final soliloquy on the sinking raft in Aguirre The Wrath of God (1972).
