I was visiting London this past week and had the
opportunity to twice see SPECTRE.
No spoilers ahead, I promise.
As I’m very old-school in my love of James Bond, I LOVED the film, much preferring it to any of the previous Daniel
Craig outings - which, to be honest, have always been a bit too grim for
me. To paraphrase a friend who also saw the film: “It’s not the best of
the Craig Bonds, but it’s my favorite.” I know that assessment sounds a
bit weird, but I totally get what he’s saying. Though I loved CASINO ROYALE and (mostly) loved SKYFALL, this is the first time since
Craig’s reign that I felt - all the way from beginning to end - that I was
watching a true-blue globe-trotting “James Bond” film and not just another
paste-by-the-numbers thug action-movie. SPECTRE has the classic 007 vibe that I’ve missed so
desperately. The opening sequence in Mexico City is one of the best of
the series IMHO, and Sam Smith's title song (much debated here) works within
the context of the credit sequence.
Can't wait until we can discuss (and, no doubt, argue) this in more detail!
