At the time the script was finished, that was the continuity that Browning intended to film. I believe that even Gary would agree to that. As to the edit of the release version, I said that Kerry's re-cut "may" have matched Browning's intended edit. Nothing in Gary's book contradicts that, except possibly his speculation on Dracula's first visit to Mina's bedroom, which I've already shown to have been based on his misreading of the script. And for all of Gary's research, he doesn't address the 1932 Hollywood magazine article that says that Carl Laemmle Sr. had ordered that the film be re-cut at the last minute.
And the author of this book is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.

It is not intended to be a "director's cut" or what the original cut of the film was like. With one or two minor exceptions, it follows the shooting script as closely as possible given the material available. That's all it was intended to do. That's why I refer to it as the "Extended Shooting Script Edition". I believe that studying it this way can help give history-minded fans the "big picture" of how the movie was planned, filmed, edited and possibly re-edited to become the movie we now know.

The gate we see when the bobby bicycles by and Van Helsing and Harker see Renfield is from the existing Carfax Abbey set, which Browning also had to improvise to suggest Lucy is stalking children near the abbey, instead of the churchyard. This is why we see Lucy walking through a wooded area with no tombstones or vault in sight - no such set was ever built.

I've read that portion of Gary's book, and I've read Clark's explanations on the board, and I've watched the 1931 film a zillion times, and Clark's revision at least 4 times...and I just can't make heads or tails of what anybody's saying about those scenes, what's in the script, what's in the film, what was or was not lifted from another scene. I know I'm just so damn old, but it makes me dizzy to try to figure it all out.
