Spider Baby

This highly influential cult classic from writer-director Jack Hill (The Switchblade Sisters, Foxy Brown) tells the demented and darkly comic tale of the Merrye children -- Elizabeth (Beverly Washburn), Virginia (Jill Banner) and Ralph (Sid Haig)-- all of who suffer from a rare genetic malady in which they mentally regress to a condition of "pre-human savagery and cannibalism." The children live in the old family mansion, and though under the cautious guardianship of chauffeur Bruno (screen icon Lon Chaney Jr.), they manage to terrorize and kill anyone or anything which passes through the gates. So when the Merryes are visited by a pair of distant relatives and their greedy lawyer with sights set on the property and remaining fortune, a wild evening of bizarre and murderous thrills ensues in what may best be described as Luis Bunuel meets The Addams Family meets The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Having not seen the movie before, when he got to the "new toy" scene I thought he was going to go and get something to get rid of the bodies - such as a wood chipper. I was going for the more sinister angle which just didn't develop.

Scarecrow... like you said, I am sure its an acquired taste film. The "over the top" performance of Sid was fairly enjoyable and I am sure Lon was working the best he could being his last film and only paid $2,500 to do it. Another of the golden age of horror idols fallen to the level of skid row films. If maybe there was more comedy but what little there is, the timing is off and there is no response. The only bit I got was when Lon looks at the camera and gives a shrug when the family comes out of the basement which included a wolf man. I found the other actors pretty annoying at times. There is another cult film that TCM plays occasionally that I found more enjoyable... "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" and that too is offbeat.

For anyone who doesn't have Spider Baby on DVD, I would suggest it for print quality and some extras but look for it on sale. TCM just aired it on September 28th so probably won't be shown again before Halloween.
