It used to keep me up at night and out of the basement when I was a child. I know it was recorded in 1912, but the copy I have, though pretty damn old, doesn't seem as old as that. Anybody know if this record was reissued on a 78, and when?

Regarding the 78 of James Whitcomb Riley reading The Raggedy Man and Little Orphant Annie, and whether it could be as old as the 1912 recording date . . . Since you seem to be indicating that this is a 2-sided disc, your copy is indeed a reissue since they were first issued as two separate single sided discs, Victor 60075 and 60076. These purple label discs were coupled onto blue label double-sided discs around 1922, yours being Victor 45190. Sally Hamlin did electrically recorded versions around 1927 on the regular Victor black label series, and the Riley originals were probably deleted soon thereafter. Early purple label copies would have Grand Prize labels, later ones would have Bat Wing labels. Early blue label copies would have Bat Wing labels, and later ones might have Scroll labels. They sold fairly well and are relatively common.
