I don't think it's all that surprising. The population of the world was just 2 billion (compared to what, nearly 7 billion today?) and the US
population (which is what matters in horror terms) was just 122 million (we're now at about 300 million). So there's more people seeing movies, more
theaters, and more money being pumped into the industry. Remember, we were never as prosperous as in the 90's. It's also easier for people to make
movies. Paul McCartney noted that there are people with far better music production software on their laptops than the Beatles had in their best studio back in
the day (and less expensive!). Same situation for movies. Note the Blair Witch Project.
And of course, there's no accounting for quality. How many of the horror films of the 80's and beyond were totally crappy direct-to-video dreck? And as another example, I can name thousands of great horror films from the 30's through the 70's. When we get to the 80's, the list drops significantly, and I'm hard pressed to name even 3 or 4 decent horror movies from the 90's and beyond, much less hundreds of awesome ones. So I'd say his articles proves only that we have more garbage than ever before.
