I saw this in a 90s manga but I'm sure it's been used before:
Basic idea-- alien on Earth wants to get back to space, but the consequence of his getting his craft going is that the Earth will be destroyed. Sound familiar? |

I think Doctor Who did it once or twice, may have been the craft taking off would destory the immediate area, as in The Time Warrior
