I didn't see a thread on this amazing 1959 film. If there is one, please direct me to it. If not, please post your thoughts here.

I got this DVD last year and just was recently watching it! I've seen in on TV many times over the years and always enjoyed it! Michael Gough is at his best here frothing at the mouth over his bimbo rejecting him. The DVD has a wonderful commentary by the late Herman Cohen. This film is always recommended by me for classic horror of the 1950's.

I love the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach of this movie. Mad writer, teenage Jekyll and Hyde, insane guy in jail cell babbling about his death ray, strumpets, killer ice tongs, portable guillotine, acid bath, very peculiar skeleton, tunnel of love slaying, monster leaping from a ferris wheel, and the infamous eyeball piercing binoculars---all in deeply saturated color and widescreen!
Not to mention the fabulous Hypno-Vista prologue! |

Even the first time I saw this as a (monster) kid, cut to bejeezus on ABC, it was pretty shocking. And, Monsterpal, don't forget Bancroft's just-the-right-height electrocution gizmo, to preheat victims for the acid bath.

A couple years after I saw it in theaters (which would be about '61 or '62-- -- NOT the thing to show to a kid, and I saw it, thank goodness), it was running on television when I was at my grandma's house. Came the scene where the psychiatrist confronts the increasingly crazy Gough, and he manuevers the doc over to the electrical gizmo and turns on the juice. My grandmother just shook her head. "What a stupid man, standing right there in front of the death ray."
Couldn't argue with that. |

When this movie came out, I was ten. I was attending a Catholic school, and had a buddy named Charlie Sheehan. We were both obsessed with monsters, while the other kids could pretty much take 'em or leave 'em. On the beautiful spring day HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM and THE HEADLESS GHOST opened, we realized to our horror that we would miss the first half of HORRORS if we didn't somehow get out of our last class. We were in luck. The last hour was an assembly. As the nun led all the kids of our first-floor sixth grade class out of the classroom, Charlie and I jumped out the window and beat feet to the theater, where we spent the afternoon reveling in Mr. Barcroft's shenanigans. We never got caught, making me realize that I had a higher mission in life than attending assemblies.
Charlie, if you're on the CHFB, send me a message! |

A fright flick that delivers the shocks and a glorious Gouch performance. I was really amazed by it when I saw it as a kid.
One of the still shocking things (to me) about the movie is the fact that those "eye spike" binoculars really were a featured item in Scotland Yard's Balck Museum and that someone sent them to an inoffensive girl in England (the father accidentally triggered it with no one hurt) and, to this day, the culprit has never been caught, as far as I know. Good idea, Jay. I always turn the adjustment disc a little before I look through them, just to be on the safe side. Man, that was a gory scene for 1959.

Did VCI ever correct the image problems on this disc? The one I have (and reportedly others experienced this same problem?) has what I can best describe as "lines" throughtout that show up, especially when there's any movement of the camera and sometimes in changing from scene to scene. Are all the discs that folks have like this, or was I just unlucky?
Thanks! |

I didn't noticed that problem, Svenstow.

Hmmmmm-on another board folks had reported seeing this as I had (I was just basically wondering then if maybe you purchased a later edition of this than I did and maybe the problem had been corrected). It's well passed "return time" as I was under the impression they were all like this, but if they've been corrected then I'll certainly try purchasing another.

I bought this one about a year and a half ago, Sven. I'd have to watch it again to be sure it doesn't have the problem you described, since I haven't seen it since I first got it.

At the time, I was studying of Black Slavery In America. Well was I shocked when I saw this movie. I do confess that I liked seeing the little squirly kid with all that peanut butter on his face, fall off the ferris wheel. I heard that the spiked binochular scenes were from an un produced THREE STOOGES project called THE 3 STOOGES MEET HERSHEL GORDON LEWIS. Can anyone confirm this for me.

Ted, your Granny is the only true critic on this site. Also agree with you about it not being for kids. You are living proof (just kiddin'). I ran around the neighborhood for weeks with peanut butter on my face and stabbing any British girls that walked by me (it's really tough to do it since I lived in West L.A.).

In response to jay maggio's comment, I agree with you 100%. But, you have to agree with me that he's no Percy Helton.

Re: HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM | ||

Monterpal, ponder this, was the fact that you saw THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN with BLACK MUSEUM, was BLACK MUSEUM really all that great or merely enhanced by the odious companion feature? Oh, I'm sorry. Should I have openned my comment with "I bought this DVD last year..."?
