The British sci-fi series PRIMEVAL (no connection to the crocodile movie from a few years ago) is coming to America. The show was produced by Impossible Pictures, the group behind WALKING WITH DINOSAURS, and features all kinds of dinosaurs, giant insects, and futuristic beasts.

PRIMEVAL premieres on BBC AMerica this Saturday. Seasons 1 and 2 will be released in a DVD set this November.

BBC American and Warner Home Video have provided information, photos, DVD cover art, and a DVD sales sheet. Everything is now on SciFi Japan:

Primeval is a very good show ... surprisingly so, even. Given the fact that the creatures are from the Walking with Dinosaurs creators, I knew the effects would be top-notch, but I'm happy to report that the show is excellent in all other categories as well. Script, story concept, pacing and direction ... all wonderful. And just the right touch of humor. But the best part of the show is the people in it -- the characters are terrific, and interesting, and are inhabited by engaging, perfectly-cast actors. No matter how "fantastic" the premise or how dazzling the visuals, good drama requires the audience to believe in and care what happens to the characters, and Primeval delivers. (This "human factor" is why Jaws is -- as much as I love the dinosaurs -- a better movie than Jurassic Park.) Analyzing my affection for Primeval, I'm sure it doesn't hurt that I have always been a big fan of "British" stuff, but even if you're not, I think you'll still enjoy it.

And, lastly, I defy any red-blooded guy who watches one episode of Primeval to not fall silly in love with Hannah Spearritt (that spelling is correct ... two "r's" and two "t's")!

Just my two farthings worth!

Series 1 of PRIMEVAL is terrific. It's exciting and fun with interesting, believable characters and decent plots. Great family adventure entertainment.

Unfortunately series 2 is dreadful, throwing out the idea of prehistoric beasts in favour of mostly fantasy monsters. It's set in a parallel world but completely fails to exploit that premise in any way whatsoever. The characters become cartoons and the plots become really, really bad B-movies full of over-the-top action heroics and the most insultingly absurd plot conveniences imaginable. One example: an episode with giant worms in an office block, but fortunately this is one of those offices where they have unsecured displays of functionally sharp samurai swords in the corridors so our hero can just reach over and pick one up. There are many other examples in every episode of s2.

I think what happened was that series 1 had a decent script editor whereas, because the show was a hit, for series 2 the writer-creators were allowed free rein. Even the episode of s2 written by the normally reliable Dr Who writer Paul Cornell is terrible.

Hmmm ... as you might have surmised, MJ, the mini-review in my previous post was indeed based only on Series 1 of Primeval -- I haven't yet seen Series 2. Based on your description, it sounds deucedly disappointing ...

I'm with MJ Simpson on this, series 2 was a terrible let-down after the unexpected excellence of series 1. But without spoiling things, I can say that series 2 ends with a mind-boggling cliffhangar that just better have a decent payoff in series 3.

But even the terrible series 2 of Primeval is better than every series of Torchwood combined!
