Recommend some good Kung-Fu flicks? |

I'm interested in seeing some good martial arts flicks. I want to see films that are good action wise, incredibly goofy, or both. What they shouldn't
be is boring. I'm thinking primarily 70s Shaw Bros./Gordon Liu type stuff. I've seen and loved MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE and FIVE DEADLY
VENOMS, if that gives you an idea. I prefer stuff that's easily found on DVD; I'm not yet ready to plunge into bootleg/gray market. That way lies
madness. Also, any good website recommendations? Thanks guys!

FEARLESS FIGHTERS (1973) is low budget but lots of fun. Image put this out on DVD last year. I also love DUEL TO THE DEATH. This has a much larger budget,
but still mind-bendingly wacky with great fight scenes and tons of bizzare goings on. I think the best DVD print was put out by Fox. Beware a cheaper DVD
which is vastly inferior. This one was made in the 80s, I think. I also love THE NEW ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN with David Chiang, who starred in LEGEND OF THE 7
GOLDEN VAMPIRES. It played in the U.S as TRIPLE IRONS. Last time I checked, this was not on DVD unfortunatley.

I recommend:
The 36th Chamber of the Shaolin - great scenes as the apprentace slowly fights his way through the Shaolin temple, learning it's secrets Crippled Masters - a guy with no arms and a guy with no legs team up to create an unstoppable fighting team. Beloved by some handicapped friends of mine. Circle of Iron - philosphical kung fu film, based on an outline by Bruce Lee. Has Eli Wallach as a guy living in a vat of oil, trying to rid himself of base animal urges, and David Carradine plays multiple roles. Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain (make sure it's the original, not the recent remake - both were directed by Tsui Hark). A major influence on Big Trouble In Little China. For more recent Hong Kong action, I recomment Bride With White Hair and Green Snake |

Hey Zog! I heartily recommend the films of actor/director/fight choreographer Sammo Hung Kam Bo, the portly classmate/contemporary of the more well known
Jackie Chan. All of Hung's films expertly combine intricate fight choreography and weapons work with goofy comedy, melodrama and (sometimes) brutal
violence. Sammo's better known films are (for the most part) readliy available on dvd (even in Region 1) in their original language (or dubbed, if you
prefer) in fine quality prints. His best kung-fu films are:
The Iron-Fisted Monk (1978)-his directorial debut set in the Shaolin Temple (uncommon for Sammo) Enter the Fat Dragon (1978)-unfortunately, this film is only available in "questionable" form and mediocre quality, but Sammo, as a plump country bumpkin who idolizes Bruce Lee is a hoot The Magnificent Butcher (1979) Sammo and legendary director/choreographer Yuen Woo Ping combine their talents in this modern day extension of the "Wong Fei Hung" legend The Odd Couple (1979)-Some of the most impressive sword-spear duels commited to celluloid with Lau Kar Wing (brother of celebrated Shaw Brothers filmmaker, Lau Kar Leung) Warriors Two (1979) -Sammo showcases Korean kicking legend Casanova Wong and Shaw almnus Leung Kar Yan Knockabout (1980)-Once again, Sammo showcases one of his classmates, the acrobatic Yuen Biao in this Jackie Chan/Drunken Master inspired film The Victim (1980)-Equal turns charming comedy (in the master-student mode) and brutally violent drama Encounters of the Spooky Kind (1980)-One of the earliest (and best) kung-fu/horror hybrids The Prodigal Son (1981)-Sammo's masterpiece (focusing on the Wing Chun style of Kung-fu) that garned the equivalent of the Hong Kong oscar If you're into more "modern day action" as well, than his films "Project A", "Wheels on Meals" "Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars", "Dragons Forever" (all featuring Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao as well), "Eastern Condors" (his version of "The Dirty Dozen") "The Shanghai Express" (a star-studded "Eastern Western") "Pedicab Driver", and "Pantyhose Hero" are all ESSENTIAL viewing Bryan |

My favorite is The Five Fingers of Death.
I bought this one about 4 years ago, by mistake, and just loved it. Back in the 70's, I spent a 'lost weekend' in Lake George, NY. On Sunday morning, some hung over friends and myself awoke to see this great Kung Fu movie on tv. It was great action wise, while also being just funny as hell. The best movie of this kind I've ever seen. Once the computer/internet age was upon us, I began my search for this flick. I thought the above movie was it, the title seemed familiar. Once I got it from Amazon, I realized that wasn't it, but it was such a pleasant surprise. My search continues for the great one. |

A couple other good ones are RETURN OF THE SCORPION (1979) and SUPER NINJAS (1982). Great action and good fun.
Plus some of the great ones from the Hong Kong heyday in the late 80s: EASTERN CONDORS, DRAGONS FOREVER, RIGHTING WRONGS, PROJECT A, ARMOUR OF GOD, POLICE STORY 3 (SUPERCOP), SHANGHAI EXPRESS, PEDICAB DRIVER, etc.

BORN TO FIGHT not only has lots of
great martial arts, but some of the most reckless young stunt guys I've ever seen. It's also delightfully cheesy.
Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.
