I believe that the Wontner films, though British in origin, had U.S. releases. And Clive Brook's Hollywood Holmeses, though not great films, are not camped.

Why stop at 1959? Aside from Rathbone, it's hard to find earlier examples of Holmes getting serious treatment from Hollywood. I can only think of Reginald Owen in A Study in Scarlet.
