If we think in evolutionary terms, could the idea of a "murder a reel" film have morphed into the slasher film? It's been awhile since I saw The Lodger, but it seems more like a crime drama/mystery, as opposed to a giallio/slasher.

I'd say Blood Feast also fits into the stalking conventions that make up a slasher.
