The color scenes did made their way into the sound re-issue. In fact, the Bal Masque print that survives is from the sound re-issue. It was printed dye-transfer (a process that started the year before) and therefore the color has remained intact, unlike a surviving 1925 print, which would be faded by now.

Interesting ads, FM62. I did not realize that the color scenes from PHANTOM were part of the sound version. Were they part of the silent version too, I wonder? The wording of the ad implies not. (Or perhaps they're only refering to tinting/toning?).

What a great thread, Gary! I love seeing these old ads. So, one theater offered $10 to any woman who would see the movies alone. That would be about $150 today. A ticket cost forty cents then, that should be $5.83 today.

A dozen fancy donuts for a quater? $3.64 today.

A hamburger for a dime? Should cost $1.46 today. The fifteen cent cheesburger, today $2.19. And the twenty-five cent steak sandwich, $3.64.

The real eye opener is the Motorola radio for $109.95. In...

That "WE DARE YOU" cracks me up. Not for the ad, but for the inadvertence of the whole thing. It's as if they were daring you not only to see the movie, but also to go to Fischer's.

Fried in butter? The "bestest"? Eating a burger at Fischer's and then going to a movie was probably a challenge in itself. It doesn't help that the image looks quite suspect, what with the grease and the phantom steam coming up only one side. E. Coli anyone?

Going through old newspapers like this makes me realize how much I really miss movie ad mats in local papers. I remember cutting out Godzilla and King Kong from a newspaper movie ad in the mid-1960s and playing with them.

I guess most CHFB members are aware of the historical significance of the 1938 FRANKENSTEIN/DRACULA double feature
that re-ignited the horror movie cycle and led not only to SON OF FRANKENSTEIN but also the second wave of horror films
that soon followed. Until I started looking through newspaper archives from the fall and winter of 1938 I had no idea just how
BIG a phenomenon the FRANKENSTEIN/DRACULA double feature truly was. The double bill seemingly played everywhere
...
