in downeys case it was more then looks.it was the no interest in hygene at all.not something i can`t see in holmes. it isn`t that downey was shorter then you would picture holmes.that was no problem with peter cushing.

I'd argue a good enough actor can make up for lack of looks. After all, Lugosi, Lee, Carradine, Langella, Schreck, Kinski look nothing like Stoker's Dracula.
