I just watched this for the first time -- I taped it off TCM a couple months ago. Made in 1934, it's a B-movie -- but it's an *MGM* B-movie, meaning it was made on a budget that probably would have bankrupted the average B-studio. And to my surprise (and delight), it comes close to being a horror-comedy -- I think if it had been set in an old dark house, it WOULD be known to horror fans. But instead it's set on a speeding train! Mary Carlisle, L.A. telephone receptionist who doesn't know...

I like "smooth" Ruggles a lot more.

I caught MURDER IN THE PRIVATE CAR the other day as well, and really enjoyed it --lots of plot and thrills packed into a trim 62 minutes (with
a pretty exciting climax). Ruggles was a bit of a drag though (as he was in MURDERS IN THE ZOO), about 10-20% of his innuendo lines were funny (the
majority...pffft!), however, he wasn't fingernails-on-the-blackboard annoying like Jerry Lewis or a Ritz brother would be in his place (Ruggles is pretty
good in RUGGLES OF RED GAP,...

I caught this movie the other night and really enjoyed it. The gorilla added just the right touch to send the movie into fun horror territory. His death scene
was pretty brutal and today seems a little shocking. Back then, especially in a breezy B-movie like this, it was just "Thanks goodness the bad old gorilla
is dead". I can usually take Charlie Ruggles or leave him, but I've always had a crush on Una Merkel and enjoy watching her in anything. The runaway
explosive train car...

MURDER IN THE PRIVATE CAR will be shown on TCM, this Wed 4/23 at 1:15AM EST (Technically, that's early Thursday morning.).

I have a gray market copy and the film is just as wild and enjoyable as Tom suggests. Definitely worth a look.

I'll post a notice in the VCR/Tivo Alert Folder as well.
