I just got an Ansco print of Monogram's 16 FATHOMS DEEP, made in 1948 on Location in Tarpon Springs, Fl. Chaney plays "Mr. Dimitri" the local bully who has the sponge market cornered. Lon looked like he just walked off the set of THE WOLF MAN. In fact, it looks like he's wearing the same suit that he wore at the beginning of that picture. Aside from a few years, Chaney looked great and the film is a nice little adventure (with Lloyd Bridges and Arthur Lake).

Every Halloween we reprint the Monster Kids essay which appeared here long before the second son of Frankenstein was even a glimmer in Elizabeth's eye.

As part of a Grace Kelly Day (or something), TCM is showing two STUDIO ONEs on Nov. 19. Grace Kelly I can take or leave, but I dig some of the other people in 'em: "The Kill" (1952) stars Dick Foran and Nina Foch, and "The Rockingham Tea Set" (1950) stars Louise Allbritton -- and it's a ghost story to boot. Go, TCM!

There is a nice interview with Benecio Del Toro in the new Playboy where he talks about the Wolfman and his love of Universal Horror. Creature from the Black Lagoon is his favorite (he owns a original one sheet) and describes Bride of Frankenstein as a classic. He also goes on to say that he looks at Boris Karloff as "his uncle" because he feels so comfortable and at ease with the old horror films. Interesting read.

Yea, he had a voice, it seemed he became mute for 1-2 films, then it returned ? Was that by design, just simply forgotten & did the script ever justify why he lost it in the first place ? I need to find my Frankie Legacy & go thru the 5 in the set. Thanks

Who else? Carl Laemmle Jr. was certainly aware of the film & performance-- hey, they had a pristine print of Nosferatu at the studio. Learning lines phonetically didn't stop Lugosi when he started out in the US. And if Count Dracula sounds a little stilted, all the better.

In the same way that Bela Lugosi kept getting hauled back to do a riff on his stage & film performance, why not Schreck? It was only 9 or 10 years since the Murnau original, and he lived til 1936...
